Her costume designer Jason Latour recently posted a fascinating thread explaining why and how that distinctive look came to be.
Gwen Stacy
Gwen Stacy is a young hero-in-training who loves to help people. She is the daughter of NYPD Captain George Stacy and his wife Helen. She is a smart, analytical thinker who knows police protocols. She also plays drums in a band called the Mary Janes. Her abilities are enhanced by her superhuman powers.
Like her friend Peter Parker, Gwen has superhuman strength (she can lift up to 10 tons), endurance, agility, and the ability to cling to walls. A bite from a radioactive spider gave her these powers. She uses them to fight crime. Her father, who distrusted Spider-Woman after the death of his daughter, is now one of her biggest supporters.
After defeating the Man-Wolf and bringing him to justice, she teamed up with S.H.I.E.L.D agent Daisy Johnson to track down Sheath, a female Inhuman who killed Gwen’s father. After she tracked Sheath down to Empire State University, Gwen asked Spider-Man for help. He agreed to analyze her symbiote at ESU’s lab first, and then joined her team as Ghost Spider. Gwen is an indispensable member of the team. Her unique characterization, swagger, and masked look make her a fan favorite. She is a true role model for young girls. Her outfit is the perfect choice for any girl who wants to embrace her inner superhero.
Spider-Gwen
After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, there is speculation that Gwen Stacy could appear in a live action MCU film. Hailee Steinfeld voices the character in the Into and Across the Spider-Verse films, and she is expected to reprise the role for an in development Spider-Gwen solo film. However, this seems unlikely given that Tom Holland already has the role of Peter Parker in his own universe.
Taking a break from interdimensional travel, Gwen returned to her home turf on Earth-616 and began helping people as Spider-Woman. She reclaimed her father’s practice and took on cases with a more grounded approach. She also found a new romance with Harry Osborn, but their relationship was complicated by the fact that his crimes were connected to hers.
As her arachnid powers waned, Gwen reached out to fellow web-slinger Cindy Moon, who had created the spider that gave her her powers, and injected her with a formula that restored them. Her next battle involved a threat from the Multiverse called Finale, who was using a device to steal life force energy and destabilize time itself. Gwen teamed up with her counterparts from other realities to defeat him. In the process, they saved their home universes and reclaimed her own.
Ghost-Spider
Gwen Stacy is one of the main characters in Across the Spider-Verse. She is the daughter of police captain George Stacy and works as a DNA scientist alongside Anya Corazon, who specializes in DNA formulas. She gains spider powers and adopts the alias Spider-Gwen. She later loses her powers and returns to her civilian identity as Gwen Stacy, but she eventually regains them. She also adds a mask to her costume and takes on the superhero name Ghost-Spider.
Like her counterpart, she has a keen mind for science and analytical thinking, a love for cats and puppies demonstrated in the episodes CAT-astrophe and Puppy Pandemonium, good detective skills and an ability to follow clues. She is also shown to be polite and thoughtful, thanking a S.H.I.E.L. agent when he gives her what she sees as a compliment.
As her superhero self, Ghost-Spider has superhuman strength, agility, speed, and reflexes, as well as the abilities of intangibility and phasing through solid matter. She often makes mistakes, such as competing against Spin in the episode Spidey to the Power of Three or rushing to catch Doc Ock by herself in the episode Mother’s Day Mayhem.
